Strengthening the sport of athletics with a talent pool that will make Indian Athletics shine brightly at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Modern India can boast of a prolific history in athletics dating back to the vedic period. India now, is literally “changing tracks” to the contemporary form of athletics. The medieval period in the history of Indian athletics, saw the advent of sports like running, jumping and throwing which are the early ancestors of the track and field events of today's athletics. Legends like Milkha Singh, Sriram Singh, P.T. Usha and Anju Bobby George came close to changing the course of Indian Athletic history. The last decade has seen Indian athletes performing admirably at continental meets and the Commonwealth Games in long distance running and the throw and jump events. However success in the sprint events is still something the country yearns for.
History does not just happen, history needs to be created. It’s time to hone budding athletes with potential to become successful in the international tournaments in the near future. NYCS and GAIL (India) Limited have together embarked on a grassroots athletics program GAIL-Indian Speed star which is aimed at unearthing young talent across the length and breadth of India. NYCS GAIL-Indian Speed star will identity and nurture talent in track events (100m, 200m and 400m) between the age group of 11 to 17 years, furthering them through access to coaching, foreign training, physiotherapy, mental conditioning and other support services.
NYCS GAIL Raftaar Indian Speed Star - The Journey
The ambitious project began in 2015 with Season –I and NYCS India’s strong network of dedicated young volunteers executed it successfully across 10 states covering 53 districts and reached out to more than 26000 athletes who had the fire to fuel our dream. Season -II took off with the aspiration to tap the untapped, to reach the unreached and to explore the unexplored. As concerned the number of participants, Season-II grew three times Season-I. Starting in November 2016 it culminated in May 2017 with a massive participation of over 1,13,547 students. The event encompassed 27 states and 5 UT’s with nearly 603 districts spanned in totality through 107 district level events. NYCS India penetrated in almost all the regions of the country including the interiors of north east and some remotest of areas like Srinagar, Leh, Ladakh & remote tribal districts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andaman & Nicobar and Mizoram.
Eight selected athletes from the first season and six from the second are being nurtured by our expert coaches and are guided through National and International camps. The bigger and better Season-II has paved way for bigger, better and now stronger Season – III.
